  • Chapter 2

      Shi Yi froze.
He knew that voice all too well. The immaturity had faded, but he would recognize it anywhere.

      “Shi Yi, is that you?”

Bai Jici’s tone lifted with faint surprise. “It really is you, Shi Yi.”

Shi Yi relaxed his jaw, where he’d been biting his lower lip. He swung his leg over the electric scooter without a word, inserted the key, and twisted it to start.

Look at what he’d become. Compared to Bai Jici, they were worlds apart — he was ruined, tattered, completely unworthy of someone like Bai Jici. And Bai Jici was brilliant; he deserved a normal life, a beautiful wife, a family. Shi Yi couldn’t ruin someone’s entire life just for his own selfish desires.

Seeing that he was about to drive off, Bai Jici quickly stepped forward to block him. His body moved before his mind could catch up, and he even paused for a second, but quickly recovered and lowered his voice.

“Can you give me a ride? My driver’s stuck somewhere, he can’t make it.”

The Bai family driver, standing less than two meters away and hearing every single word: “……………”

Shi Yi wanted to refuse. If things spiraled out of his control, everything would head into the unknown.

      “Why don’t you just call a —”

Bai Jici placed a hand over his, voice deliberately soft and pleading. “Shi Yi, please.”

The driver, smoking nearby, choked on his cigarette. He stared in disbelief.
Did he just see… the young master Bai, who’d kept a cold face for five whole years, acting coquettish toward a man?
Was he going to be silenced later?

The word “Didi” died in his throat.
Shi Yi sighed in defeat, turned his head away, and spoke stiffly.

      “Get on.”

His heart was still as soft as it used to be.

A faint smile curved Bai Jici’s lips, his eyebrows lifting slightly.

During the ride, Bai Jici chatted nonstop like an overly dedicated companion AI. His skill at making conversation was first-class, and he successfully pried out Shi Yi’s home address and phone number.

After that, Shi Yi learned to keep his mouth shut, no matter what he was asked.

Bai Jici didn’t mind. He already had the important information.
The rest of the ride was silent, until they reached his company.

Bai Jici straightened his collar and stepped off elegantly. He glanced back at Shi Yi with a gentle smile.

“I want to start over with you. Please think about it.”

      “No.”

Shi Yi refused without hesitation, his expression steady enough to show nothing. “I’ve let you go already.”

At that, Bai Jici’s smile faded a little. A thin layer of frost settled in his eyes.

“You’re having dinner at a friend’s place tonight?”

Shi Yi was surprised, but quickly felt happy for his brother. If Shi Qi was willing to go out, did that mean his condition was improving?
Maybe it was a good sign.

He had barely laid back on his bed when the phone rang again.

Shi Yi answered casually, holding it to his ear. “Hello?”

      “It’s me.”

      Shi Yi stiffened. “Bai Jici?”

“Mm. Come to the Tide Restaurant tonight. I’ll wait for you at eight.”

He hung up immediately, not giving Shi Yi any chance to reply.

Shi Yi followed the navigation to the restaurant. As soon as he pushed the door open, cold air from the air conditioner washed over him, instantly chasing away the summer heat.

He found Bai Jici in a corner booth. He took a deep breath, calmed his emotions, and walked straight over.

“I knew you’d come.” Bai Jici shook his wine glass at him, half-empty. “Come drink with me.”

Shi Yi pulled out a chair and sat down. He moved the glass, which was nearly full, and stared at the calm surface of the wine for a moment before lifting his eyes.

“If I hadn’t come tonight, what would you have done?”

Bai Jici took a sip, his gaze intense. “I would have waited. Until you came.”

Shi Yi looked away instinctively and lifted the glass, downing the red wine in one gulp.

Bai Jici refilled it. He drank. Refilled again. Drank again.
After several rounds, both of them were drunk.

The men Bai Jici had arranged in the restaurant stepped forward, supported them both, and escorted them to a pre-booked hotel room.

      The door clicked locked.
Bai Jici opened his eyes and turned his head to look at Shi Yi lying beside him. His gaze was dark and heavy. Being close to Shi Yi like this felt like something from a past life.

No matter what happened this time, he would never let go.
He’d already lost five years. He couldn’t lose him again.

His eyes fell on Shi Yi’s fair neck and the collarbone disappearing beneath his collar.
Maybe it was the alcohol, but he felt a physical reaction.

One hand slipped between his pants, his gaze still fixed on the back of Shi Yi’s neck. The blanket shifted slightly. Bai Jici’s breathing grew heavier. After a moment, he let out a quiet, muffled breath.

Then he closed his eyes and drifted into light sleep.

      Shi Yi’s fingers moved slightly.
