      “After you.”

Lin Jiao opened the double door with his right hand and made an elegant gesture.

“Whenever you make up your mind, you can come back here. I’ll be waiting.”

Lin Jiao blinked, his voice soft and unusually gentle — a complete contrast to his earlier intensity.

“When it comes to love, the worst thing is being reckless. You’re just stuck at an important crossroads. Don’t rush. When you’re ready… I’ll still be here.”

      “…”

Shi Qi’s foot froze mid-step, just about to leave. He tilted his head slightly and gave Lin Jiao a hard-to-read glance. Then he walked out without looking back.

Lin Jiao smiled indifferently, though the light in his eyes dimmed. He watched Shi Qi’s back for a long while before closing the door and returning to the single sofa in the private room.

Meanwhile, Shi Qi locked himself in the restroom. He turned on the faucet, scooped up cold water, and splashed it over his face. The sharp chill helped him steady his crumbling sanity.

He leaned both hands on the sink and stared at his reflection: droplets running down his face, defeated, bitter, miserable.

He closed his eyes lightly. A heavy knot tightened in his chest, and his heart ached — as if a scalpel was cutting it open, bit by bit. He could even feel the cold of the blade.

He had given his whole heart.
Why couldn’t he get a happy ending?
Was his love really that worthless?
Did he deserve to be betrayed, trampled on?

“Why…” His knuckles whitened from gripping the sink too hard. His body trembled faintly. “Why did this have to happen to me…? Why me…?”

      He had only loved someone.

A soft creak suddenly reached his ears — the sound of the door being pushed open.

Right. He forgot to lock it.
Who knew who was coming? If they saw him like this, how would they talk? His image would be completely ruined.

Pathetic, Shi Qi. A genius doctor, reduced to this.

      He mocked himself silently.

      “Shi Qi?”

The person spoke, the ending rising in uncertain question.

Shi Qi’s body went rigid. His eyes widened slightly.
How could he ever forget that voice?

The owner of this voice was…

      Feng Yi.

The bastard who had cruelly thrown him away, toyed with his heart.
And also the person he still loved, the one he couldn’t let go of.

He still couldn’t forget that day three months ago, when Feng Yi tossed the breakup money at him and said:

“Toys get thrown away once you’re done with them. Even kids know that. You’re a grown man, Shi Qi — you can’t be dumber than a child, right? Besides, being clingy? That’s for idiots. We’re adults. We should keep some dignity.”

“That’s all. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other.”

Shi Yi forced himself to calm down and turned around with feigned composure. But when his gaze landed on Feng Yi, he still froze for a second.

He steadied his emotions and looked at him expressionlessly, his voice cold.

      “What do you want?”

Feng Yi stared back at him. For some reason, he fell quiet. He took a step forward — and Shi Qi immediately stepped back.

Feng Yi watched him for a moment, his expression unreadable. He sighed softly.

      “Can we talk?”

Shi Qi was silent for a while. “Talk about what?”

The words fell, and a delicate, awkward silence settled between them.

Feng Yi leaned one hand on the sink, less than ten centimeters away from Shi Qi’s. His fingertip brushed the surface lightly, giving a false, gentle impression.

Shi Qi’s eyes kept darting to his hand: pale skin, faint blue veins, long fingers, a tiny mole on the back of his right hand.

Back when they were deeply in love, whenever Feng Yi had playfully ground his teeth against his throat, Shi Qi would always end up biting that right hand.

That mole was etched into his memory.

      But now…

No matter how beautiful the past was, it was only memories.
