这个理由着实让我吃惊，在那个年代的英国居然管的这么宽，简直就像现在工作问你有没有成家，有没有孩子一样。真是夸张。
"A most unreasonable demand," said Mr. Pembroke.
在这里我也才终于明白为什么Meredith在往来信函里谈起成立学校，却要特别提到自己要娶谁做妻子，当时看的时候就觉得这人疯了么，明明工作的事情却要提到自己结婚？现在看来倒是明白了，可想而知社会压力对个人幸福的冷漠。
